Questions We Hear Most
Answers for Fairborn and Dayton-area patients—from TMJ and TMD symptoms to referrals, first visits, and what happens in a therapy session.
TMJ disorder (temporomandibular joint disorder) refers to a group of conditions affecting the jaw joint and the muscles that control jaw movement. Symptoms can include jaw pain, clicking or popping sounds, headaches, ear pain, and difficulty opening or closing the mouth fully.
TMJ disorder can be caused by a combination of factors including jaw injury, teeth grinding (bruxism), arthritis, stress-related muscle tension, misaligned bite, or structural issues with the joint itself. In many cases, multiple contributing factors are present.
Common signs include jaw pain or soreness, clicking or popping when you open your mouth, headaches (especially in the morning), ear pain or fullness, neck and shoulder tension, and difficulty chewing. A proper diagnosis requires a clinical evaluation from your Physician, Dentist or Chiropractor— we assess your jaw mechanics, bite, and muscle function during your initial assessment.
For most people, TMJ disorder is manageable and responds well to conservative treatment. Left untreated, however, chronic jaw tension can worsen over time and affect sleep, nutrition, and quality of life. Early intervention typically leads to the best outcomes.
